One of Lava Canyon's Many Unassuming Falls

Description
Lava Canyon was carved by ancient lava flows in what is now the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, which includes Mt St Helens. Long before St Helens erupted in 1980, all of the modern Gifford Pinchot area was active volcanic territory. These ancient lava flows carved out the earth but left behind minerals that mixed with sediment to form deep marble mahogany browns, burgundy reds, and deep yellows in the soil. Today, the vibrant blue waters of the Muddy River flow through the canyons carved by lava.
